Parties to the economic agreement seek common ground

Businesses and the political parties that shape the business environment have the greatest common ground in the development of the economy in understanding the importance of the economy. However, there is no consensus on what needs to be done to develop a competitive economy and how to measure it. This clarification and persuasion will continue to be worked on by the leaders of the economic agreement.
This spring, business unions called on politicians to make the development of a competitive economy a national focus topic for the next decade. To ensure this, the companies called on politicians to conclude an economic agreement that formulates the necessary steps for the state and companies to ensure development, and also provides metrics for assessing development.
The goal of these steps is clear – increasing the competitiveness of the economy, which will help to move towards the goal formulated in the "Estonia 2035" strategy, i.e. to increase the productivity of the Estonian economy to 110% of the EU average in the next decade (today we are at about 80%).
We also presented these proposals and their metrics to political parties this spring, and after these meetings we can say that with the majority of political parties, as well as the government, we understand in the same way the importance of the economy in ensuring the vitality and development of the country. This is one of the three prerequisites for concluding an economic agreement.
We plan to continue the discussion with the political parties in the autumn on the other two assumptions – whether and how, perhaps, according to which metrics to focus on the development of the economy and how to assess development in the desired direction.
However, pending the outcome of these discussions, companies and business associations can continue to take their own steps and work to increase their competitiveness.
