Business Step #5 - Let's raise the quality of leadership!

At the beginning of the year, the Estonian Hotel and Restaurant Association (EHRL) convened a hospitality managers' club to exchange experiences and jointly develop the sector.
As a result, on 13 May, a broader exchange event was organised on recruiting and onboarding new people in hotels and restaurants. Due to the seasonal nature of the sector, almost all businesses are faced with the question of how to "on-board" new and often inexperienced people as quickly and efficiently as possible before the summer. It is not only about teaching professional skills quickly and getting contracts in place, but also about experience - how can you make that same person want to stay in the industry and recommend it to their friends? What can businesses do to ensure that a job in a hotel or restaurant is not a temporary one, but one that encourages people to stay and plan their future development and career?
Feliks Talpsepp from the Siigur Group, who recruits hundreds of new people every summer for seasonal restaurants, Kairi Normak - the HR manager of Duco Hotels, who is responsible for the design and implementation of HR policies for three hotels in the capital, and Kristjan PeƤske, who operates three restaurants and bars and is known as an entrepreneur who supports the continuous development of his employees, shared their experiences. More than 50 people in the room listened with interest and contributed to the discussion, representing both large and small hospitality companies. Almost all the participants found something in the speakers' practices that they could apply in their own work to improve the quality of management when new people join the team.
EHRL plans to continue organising such extended leadership club experience-sharing events in the autumn, where new sector-specific topics will be brought to the table. The experiences of other companies are very inspiring and often change does not require a major investment, but rather a change of mindset and attention.
